Packing a desktop-class CPU and GPU into a slim chassis means heat with nowhere to go — and over time the thermal paste dries out, the heatsink clogs with dust, and the fans wear. When a gaming laptop’s GPU fails, most shops have one answer: replace the whole motherboard — if they can even source one for your model. For an Alienware or ROG board that’s often £400–£700, assuming it’s available at all.

We work at component level instead. A failed GPU is reballed or replaced, the cracked solder joints behind the artefacts are repaired, and — critically — we fix the thermal cause so it doesn’t happen again. What We Measure Before We Call It a GPU Job

A gaming laptop that gets loud, throttles, then shuts down on a load screen is usually a heat-path problem: dried factory paste, packed fans, a heat-pipe that no longer wets the die. That is a strip, clean, quality paste and a thermal test — not a GPU swap. A machine that artefacts, shows lines, or dies only after ten or twenty minutes at full load with temps already under control is the other job: the GPU or its power, sometimes a reball.

On first power we measure both. Junction temperature and clocks under load tell us whether the paste job is enough. Artefacts at idle, or a GPU that falls off the bus with the heatsink already doing its job, tell us it is not. Mixing those two up is how people pay for a GPU repair they did not need. Razer Blades often fail at the EC / I/O; MSI and Legion machines two or three years on are frequently just cooked paste; Alienware and ROG boards are the ones we more often see with a real GPU or VRM fault after the thermals are proven.
