Gaming Laptop Repair — Overheating, GPU, Power & Board-Level Faults

Thermal shutdowns mid-game, GPU artefacts, a dead board or a laptop that throttles to a crawl? Gaming laptops run hot and hard, and they fail in ways high-street shops can’t touch. We repair them at component level — the cause, not just the symptom.

Why Gaming Laptops Overheat — and What We Do About It

Overheating is the number-one gaming-laptop killer. Packing a desktop-class CPU and GPU into a slim chassis means heat with nowhere to go — and over time the thermal paste dries out, the heatsink clogs with dust, and the fans wear. The result: thermal throttling, sudden shutdowns mid-game, and fan noise like a jet engine.

Left unchecked, sustained heat is also what cracks the GPU’s BGA solder joints — turning a £20 maintenance job into a board-level repair. Catching it early matters.

We strip the cooling system, replace the thermal paste with high-grade compound, re-pad the VRMs and memory, clean and test the fans, and bring temperatures back under control — so the machine performs like it should and the board stops cooking.

Gaming Laptop Faults We Fix

From a quick thermal service to full board-level recovery — if your gaming laptop does any of these, we can help.

Overheating & Throttling

Shutdowns mid-game, loud fans, sluggish performance. Full thermal service: repaste, re-pad, fan clean and a heat test.

GPU Failure & Artefacts

Coloured artefacts, glitching, crashes under load or a black screen on the dedicated GPU. We reball/replace the BGA and fix the thermal cause.

No Power / Dead Board

No lights, no boot, or dies under load. A board-level fault — shorted power rail, failed VRM or charging IC — diagnosed and repaired.

Charging & Power Delivery

High-wattage gaming chargers stress the power circuit. Won’t charge, charges slowly, or drops power under load — we rebuild the charging stage.

High-Refresh Screens

Cracked or faulty 144Hz/165Hz/240Hz panels replaced with the correct high-refresh spec — see our screen replacement service.

Liquid Damage

Drinks at the desk happen. We clean corrosion and repair shorted components at board level — see our liquid damage service.

GPU & Board-Level Repair, Done Properly

When a gaming laptop’s GPU fails, most shops have one answer: replace the whole motherboard — if they can even source one for your model. For an Alienware or ROG board that’s often £400–£700, assuming it’s available at all.

We work at component level instead. A failed GPU is reballed or replaced, the cracked solder joints behind the artefacts are repaired, and — critically — we fix the thermal cause so it doesn’t happen again. A reflow that ignores the heat problem is a repair with a countdown timer; we don’t do those.

It’s precise, microscope-level work — exactly what Sorin teaches to repair technicians worldwide.

Every Gaming Brand

We repair MSI, ASUS ROG & TUF, Alienware & Dell G-series, Razer Blade, Lenovo Legion, Acer Predator & Nitro, HP Omen & Victus, Gigabyte & Aorus and more. Thin-and-light or full RGB battlestation — if it games, we can diagnose and repair it at board level.

Repaired by a Board-Level Specialist

Your gaming laptop is repaired personally by Sorin — the specialist behind the Electronics Repair School YouTube channel and its 460,000+ subscribers, where GPU reball, micro-soldering and board-level diagnostics are taught to technicians worldwide. The same hands you see in the videos, on your machine — never a junior or a third-party send-off.

Honest Pricing & Turnaround

A full thermal service (repaste, re-pad, fan clean) typically starts around £70–£120; board-level and GPU/BGA repairs are quoted individually after diagnosis. We always diagnose and quote before any work — no surprises.

No fix, no fee. Typical turnaround is 3–7 working days from arrival, depending on the repair and parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, and it’s one of the most common gaming-laptop repairs we do. We strip the cooling system, replace dried-out thermal paste with high-grade compound, re-pad the VRMs and memory, and clean or replace the fans. That brings temperatures back under control and stops the throttling and shutdowns — and protects the GPU from heat damage.
Usually, yes. We work at component level: a failing GPU is reballed or replaced and the cracked BGA joints behind the artefacts are repaired — far cheaper than a full board swap, and viable on models where a replacement board isn’t even available. We also fix the thermal cause so it lasts.
Because heat is what cracked the GPU solder joints in the first place. A reflow or reball that ignores the cooling problem will fail again. We always address the thermal side — paste, pads, fans — as part of a GPU repair, so it’s a lasting fix, not a temporary one.
All the major ones: MSI, ASUS ROG and TUF, Alienware and Dell G-series, Razer Blade, Lenovo Legion, Acer Predator and Nitro, HP Omen and Victus, Gigabyte and Aorus, and more. Component-level repair works at the circuit level, so brand isn’t a barrier.

Yes — we fit correct-spec 144Hz, 165Hz and 240Hz panels, not generic replacements that drop your refresh rate. See our screen replacement page for details.

I started following Sorin's channel on YouTube quite a few years ago. I have learned so much from him and there were a few jobs I couldn't handle that I sent to him. In all cases he was able to fix my customer's devices at a very reasonable cost. Highly recommended!
