Laptop Motherboard Repair — Component-Level, Not a Board Swap

Dead laptop? No power, no display, a board the manufacturer says is “unrepairable”? We diagnose and repair laptop motherboards down to the individual component — the shorted capacitor, the blown power IC, the cracked BGA — instead of charging you for a whole new board.

What “Component-Level” Repair Actually Means

When most repair shops see a faulty motherboard, they do one of two things: quote you for a complete replacement board (often £300–£600 if they can even find one), or tell you the laptop is a write-off because the board is no longer made. Either way you lose — on cost, or on the laptop entirely.

A laptop motherboard isn’t a single part. It’s hundreds of tiny components — power regulators, capacitors, MOSFETs, charging ICs, the CPU and GPU — on one board. When a laptop dies, it’s almost always one of those that has failed, not the whole board.

Component-level repair means we trace the fault to the exact part that failed and replace just that — under a microscope, with proper micro-soldering. It’s usually a fraction of the cost of a new board, it keeps your data and your original machine, and it brings back laptops that are otherwise impossible to source parts for.

Motherboard Faults We Fix at Board Level

If your laptop shows any of these, the fault is on the board — and almost always repairable without replacing it.

No Power / Completely Dead

No lights, no fan, nothing on the charger. Usually a shorted power rail or a failed charging/power IC — we find the short and replace the part.

No Display / Black Screen

Laptop powers on but the screen stays black, or only an external monitor works. Often a GPU, display rail or backlight-circuit fault on the board.

No POST / Boot Loops

Fans spin but it never boots, or it powers on and off in a loop. A board-level fault in the power sequencing or a corrupted BIOS chip.

USB-C & Charging IC Faults

Won’t charge, charges only sometimes, or killed a port with a bad cable. We rebuild the charging circuit and replace the charging IC.

Liquid Damage & Corrosion

Spills cause shorts and corrosion across the board. We clean, find the shorted components and repair — see our liquid damage service.

GPU / BGA & Reball

Graphics artefacts, crashes under load or a dead GPU. We reflow or reball the BGA chip and address the underlying thermal cause, not just the symptom.

How We Diagnose a Dead Board

A board swap is guesswork with a credit card attached. Real motherboard repair is detective work — and it’s exactly the process Sorin teaches to hundreds of thousands of repair technicians:

Component Repair vs. a New Board

Component-Level Repair

Every Brand, Every Board

Component-level repair isn’t brand-specific — it works at the circuit level, so we repair Windows laptop boards from every manufacturer: HP, Dell, Lenovo & ThinkPad, ASUS, Acer, MSI, Razer, Samsung and Microsoft Surface. From everyday ultrabooks to high-end gaming laptops, if it has a motherboard, we can diagnose it.

Repaired by the Specialist Who Teaches It

Component-level motherboard repair is a rare skill — and it’s the one Sorin is known for worldwide. He runs the Electronics Repair School YouTube channel, where 460,000+ subscribers learn board-level diagnostics, micro-soldering and BGA rework. Your laptop is repaired personally by him, on the same bench you see in those videos — not handed to a junior or shipped to a third party.

Honest Pricing & Turnaround

Every board is different, so we diagnose first and quote before doing any work — you’ll never get a surprise bill. As a guide: many common faults (power, charging, single shorted component) fall in the £90–£180 range; GPU/BGA reball and multi-fault boards are quoted individually.

No fix, no fee. If we can’t recover your board, you don’t pay for the repair. Typical turnaround is 3–7 working days from arrival, depending on parts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Almost always, yes — if the repair is done at component level. A board swap can cost more than the laptop is worth, but repairing the single failed component is typically a fraction of that. It also keeps your data and your original machine. The main exception is severe physical or fire damage across multiple areas of the board, which we’ll tell you honestly at diagnosis.
Usually, yes. “No power” is one of the most common board faults and is almost always a shorted component or a failed power/charging IC. We measure the power rails to find the short, replace the part, and bring the board back to life. Send it in for a free diagnosis.
No. Component-level repair works on the motherboard itself and leaves your storage drive untouched, so your files stay exactly where they are. (If your drive itself has failed, that’s a separate conversation and we’ll advise you.)
Yes. We reball BGA chips including GPUs, and — crucially — we address the thermal cause behind the failure, not just reflow and hope. Done properly, with the underlying cooling issue resolved, a reball is a lasting repair rather than a temporary fix.
We diagnose and quote before any work — no surprises. Many common faults fall in the £90–£180 range; GPU/BGA and complex multi-fault boards are quoted individually. Typical turnaround is 3–7 working days from arrival. No fix, no fee.
Yes — component-level repair works at the circuit level, so brand doesn’t limit us. We repair HP, Dell, Lenovo/ThinkPad, ASUS, Acer, MSI, Razer, Samsung and Surface boards, from budget Windows laptops to flagship gaming machines.

I started following Sorin's channel on YouTube quite a few years ago. I have learned so much from him and there were a few jobs I couldn't handle that I sent to him. In all cases he was able to fix my customer's devices at a very reasonable cost. Highly recommended!
